Classic Mint Julep

The Kentucky Derby may be over, but Mint Julep day is not. May 30th is “National Mint Julep Day” and after searching the web high and low, I found the official Kentucky Derby Mint Julep recipe just for you. Here is the “Old Forester Mint Julep” that is served almost 120,000 times over the two-day period at the Derby. Bottoms up!

For the Old Forester Mint Julep:
2 cups                                   Sugar
2 cups                                   Water
6 to 8 each                             Sprigs of Fresh Mint
As needed                             Crushed Ice
2 oz.                                      Old Forester Straight Bourbon Whisky

Method:
Make a simple syrup by boiling the water and sugar together for 5 minutes.
Cool and place in a covered container with 6 to 8 sprigs of the fresh mint and refrigerate overnight.
Fill a julep cup with crushed ice.
Add one tablespoon of the homemade mint syrup and the whisky.
Stir rapidly with a spoon until the outside of the glass is frosted.
Garnish with a sprig of mint.

Keep the Kentucky Derby alive all year long. Put on your Derby hat and grab a drink.
